  • 220 Merrill Street

220 Merrill St., Birmingham Oakland County

    (248) 645-2150

The bar is one of Birmingham's favorite watering holes, the dining room in the back slightly less frantic at this brightly reworked circa-1932 building where chef Jack Leone has done wonders for the menu. Now colorful contemporary dishes, typified by angelhair pasta with chicken, tomatoes, white beans and artichokes, stuffed tenderloin and linguine with shrimp, spinach and lemon, and some great Italian salads make the food live up to the witty decor which pays homage to the light bulb. A separate, downstairs room called Edison's offers live jazz, its own menu of light dishes, and upscale drinks like martinis and champagne in the evening, Thursday through Saturday.

  • Archimedes @ The Hyatt Regency Dearborn

600 Town Center Dr., Dearborn Detroit

    (313) 593-1234

Named after Archimedes, the ancient Greek mathematician, the Hyatt's lobby bar is decorated with images of Archimedes' most famous invention, the water screw. The design is even etched on the 30-foot-long art glass mural surrounding the bar and grand piano. Tables and sofas offer a slightly retro yet contemporary environment. The new 32-page bar menu lists many refreshing, creative drinks, some with mathematically themed names, as well as a variety of food items, including chips and salsa, chicken fingers, salads, sandwiches and rib eye steak. There are also two televisions for sports enthusiasts.

  • Aretha's Jazz Cafe

    350 Madison St. Detroit

    (313) 887-8500

If “Musick has Charms to soothe a savage Breast” (William Congreve, 1697), food, too, will smooth savage passions or normal grumpiness brought on by hunger pangs. Sandwiches come with big, perfect steak fries. The Cuban is crunchy and filling, with lots of pickle. Appetizers are another way to go, with my favorite being the skewered coconut shrimp: light, crisp, just a tad sweet. Chicken or beef quesadillas are served with a creditable guacamole as well as salsa and sour cream, and Cuban black bean soup, a mix of whole beans and purée, has a vinegar kick. There’s only one dinner-type entrée per se on the menu — those same three lamb chops, but less interestingly presented, with rice and green beans — and a couple of desserts. To buy tickets to a Jazz Café show, call Music Hall or see Ticketmaster. Food is served from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. on weekends.

  • Aut Bar

315 Braun Court, Ann Arbor Washtenaw County

    (734) 9943677; (734) 1396 (FAX)

In the summer months, historic Kerrytown's Aut Bar spills out onto a quiet courtyard it has nearly all to itself. Functioning as a restaurant and a bar (the second level is 21 and older only), the kitchen was formerly only open at night, But there's now a popular weekend brunch Saturday (10 a.m.- 2 p.m.) and Sunday (10a.m.-3 p.m.) For brunch, Mexican specialties are standouts, including breakfast burritos or huevos motulenos — layers of corn tortilla, eggs, and black beans with ranchero sauce, diced ham, peas and cheese on top. Even the standard omelet gets a twist, like the take-off from meat and cheese in their turkey and gouda. The Aut Bar is definitely gay-friendly, catering to the LGBT community and their friends, families, and allies.
