  • 220 Merrill Street

220 Merrill St., Birmingham Oakland County

    (248) 645-2150

The bar is one of Birmingham's favorite watering holes, the dining room in the back slightly less frantic at this brightly reworked circa-1932 building where chef Jack Leone has done wonders for the menu. Now colorful contemporary dishes, typified by angelhair pasta with chicken, tomatoes, white beans and artichokes, stuffed tenderloin and linguine with shrimp, spinach and lemon, and some great Italian salads make the food live up to the witty decor which pays homage to the light bulb. A separate, downstairs room called Edison's offers live jazz, its own menu of light dishes, and upscale drinks like martinis and champagne in the evening, Thursday through Saturday.

  • 2Booli Fresh Mediterranean Eats

37610 W. 12 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills Detroit

    (248) 994-0614

For many diners, the lack of a liquor license is a deal-breaker. That proclivity can relegate most Middle Eastern spots to a lunchtime treat rather than an evening pleasure. Farmington Hills’ 2Booli addresses the problem with not only a full bar but a happy hour that lasts all evening long, Monday through Friday. Draughts are $2.50, margaritas and martinis are $4, and featured wines of the week are also about $4, or $12-$15 a bottle. As the name makes clear, the restaurant has aspirations to address several cultures around the Mediterranean, rather than just the Lebanon from which the owners’ parents emigrated. Bruschetta, polenta, fritto misto, clam linguine, and a meatball sub share the menu with tabbouleh and falafel.

  • Angelina Italian Bistro

1565 Broadway, at Grand Circus Park Detroit

    (313) 962-1355; (313) (FAX)

Both co-owners had Sicilian grandmothers, and both toiled in other people’s restaurants — for a total of 50 years — before making their dream come true. The experience shows, with Italian food (and some extras) at “prices that reflect the new reality” -- at least when it comes to the entrées and the wines. There are only three pasta dishes (four if you count the potato-and-flour gnocchi) and three pizzas. The sophisticated Italian menu is supplemented by some fabulous cured and smoked fish and meats as antipasti and by a few dishes that would be comfortable on any menu, such as New York strip, salmon and a pork chop. Also consider the fitting accompaniments: a pile of flaked Parmigiano-Reggiano with a bit of balsamic; a mound of watercress with a superior lemony dressing; a little metal cup of assorted olives; a puddle of grainy mustard. It’s all good. See the menu and the drinks list at angelinadetroit.com.

The Palushaj Family of Albanian origin welcomes you to Archie's! We worked hard at different restaurants around metro Detroit learning the important elements of operating a successful restaurant. In December 1981, we proudly opened Archie's! Our restaurant philosophy is simple - dedication to hard work, exceptional service, a friendly "family" atmosphere, fantastic food and huge portions. This is what sets Archie's apart from many other restaurants. Dinners in our family have always been special, a time when we all get together to enjoy good food and good company. That's why we believe in "homemade" freshness when preparing your meal.
  • Archimedes @ The Hyatt Regency Dearborn

600 Town Center Dr., Dearborn Detroit

    (313) 593-1234

Named after Archimedes, the ancient Greek mathematician, the Hyatt's lobby bar is decorated with images of Archimedes' most famous invention, the water screw. The design is even etched on the 30-foot-long art glass mural surrounding the bar and grand piano. Tables and sofas offer a slightly retro yet contemporary environment. The new 32-page bar menu lists many refreshing, creative drinks, some with mathematically themed names, as well as a variety of food items, including chips and salsa, chicken fingers, salads, sandwiches and rib eye steak. There are also two televisions for sports enthusiasts.

  • Aretha's Jazz Cafe

    350 Madison St. Detroit

    (313) 887-8500

If “Musick has Charms to soothe a savage Breast” (William Congreve, 1697), food, too, will smooth savage passions or normal grumpiness brought on by hunger pangs. Sandwiches come with big, perfect steak fries. The Cuban is crunchy and filling, with lots of pickle. Appetizers are another way to go, with my favorite being the skewered coconut shrimp: light, crisp, just a tad sweet. Chicken or beef quesadillas are served with a creditable guacamole as well as salsa and sour cream, and Cuban black bean soup, a mix of whole beans and purée, has a vinegar kick. There’s only one dinner-type entrée per se on the menu — those same three lamb chops, but less interestingly presented, with rice and green beans — and a couple of desserts. To buy tickets to a Jazz Café show, call Music Hall or see Ticketmaster. Food is served from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. on weekends.

  • Atlas Global Bistro

    3111 Woodward Ave. Detroit

    (313) 831-2241

At Atlas, you’ll find Carolina catfish, pork taquitos, short ribs, ravioli and polenta, Hawaiian shrimp and Moroccan beef. Ingredients — which don’t necessarily remain with their cuisine-of-origin — include lemongrass, cactus, Gorgonzola, wasabi, coconut, pancetta, caviar and black-eyed peas. It may sound like the chef is confused, but even if he were, open-minded taste buds should not quibble with the results.
  • Atwater Block Brewery

    237 Joseph Campau St. Detroit

    (313) 877-9205

Atwater is back, both the name and the concept of a great brewery with great food. Expect the original Atwater beers with "very, very good pub food." That will mean regional and seasonal specials and such German specialties as wiener schnitzel.
  • Auburn Cafe

3520 W. Jefferson Ave., Ecorse Detroit

    (313) 381-8133

This fine little Greek restaurant has been treasured by the downriver community for over 20 years. Called downriver's best kept secret, this place can make anyone into a Greek food fanatic. Many patrons have even claimed it to be the single best place for casual Greek dinning in the Detroit metro area. The Auburn has won numerous awards for its salads, but the real treat is the owner, Serafim Callis. His charismatic nature and old world sense of humor will have you planning your next visit, before you even finish your last lamb chop.
  • Aut Bar

315 Braun Court, Ann Arbor Washtenaw County

    (734) 9943677; (734) 1396 (FAX)

In the summer months, historic Kerrytown's Aut Bar spills out onto a quiet courtyard it has nearly all to itself. Functioning as a restaurant and a bar (the second level is 21 and older only), the kitchen was formerly only open at night, But there's now a popular weekend brunch Saturday (10 a.m.- 2 p.m.) and Sunday (10a.m.-3 p.m.) For brunch, Mexican specialties are standouts, including breakfast burritos or huevos motulenos — layers of corn tortilla, eggs, and black beans with ranchero sauce, diced ham, peas and cheese on top. Even the standard omelet gets a twist, like the take-off from meat and cheese in their turkey and gouda. The Aut Bar is definitely gay-friendly, catering to the LGBT community and their friends, families, and allies.
