Chris Moore: Lyrics and More

Through Nov. 29
Lawrence Street Gallery 22620 Woodward, Suite A, Ferndale Downtown Ferndale

Original Negative Approach drummer Chris Moore started creating flyers for the pioneering punk rock band when he was just a teenager, marking the beginning of his career as an experimental visual artist as well as a songwriter. For his latest exhibition, Moore “re-writes” lyrics from the past 25 years of his songwriting over his paintings. The exhibition has an opening reception on Friday, Nov. 1, and it's a night of both Moore's visual art and music: Moore is set to do a 10-minute composition utilizing four drummers at 7:15 p.m. at the Loving Touch next door. Humble and Human: Impressionist Era Treasures from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Detroit Institute of Arts, an Exhibition in Honor of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr.

Tuesdays-Saturdays. Continues through Jan. 5
Detroit Institute of Arts 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit Midtown

If you haven’t had a chance to behold the beauty of the Detroit Institute of Arts’ new Impressionist-era exhibition, there’s still time. The museum announced last week that it will now run through Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020. The show, which opened in June, was originally supposed to come down in October. The museum says it made the decision to keep it open due to near-record attendance: more than 100,000 people visited the exhibition in its first 13 weeks, and 200,000 are expected by the new closing date, which will make it the highest-attended exhibition at the DIA in nearly 20 years. The show features 44 works by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters like Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and more. Many of the works on display had never been shown in Detroit. It honors the late art collector Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., the founder and owner of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills who lived in the Detroit area for much of his life. 313-833-7900

Sam Durant: Iconoclasm

Through Nov. 23
Annunciation Church 1265 Parkview St., Detroit East English Village

There is perhaps no more of a visually dramatic marker of the clash of cultures and the end of eras than the destruction of monuments — from the toppling of the Column Vendôme in Paris in 1871 in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War, to the U.S. troops toppling a statue of Saddam Hussein during the invasion of Iraq, to the destruction of non-Muslim works under the Islamic State. Moments like these are depicted in the large-scale graphite drawings of the Berlin-via-Boston artist Sam Durant, which make up Library Street Collective’s latest exhibition. In the spirit of the public monuments depicted in the show, LSC has hung selected drawings in and around Detroit, and an exhibition will be held at East Village’s former Annunciation Church. A short film inspired by Durant’s work scored by Arcade Fire will also be screened.

Michigan Watercolor Society: 72nd Annual Award Recipients Exhibition

Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Continues through Nov. 27

This exhibition features the thirty award winning watercolor paintings from the Michigan Watercolor Society’s 72nd Annual Exhibition. Juror, Chris Krupinski, made exhibition choices based on a variety of considerations. He chose pieces with a broad selection of subject matter, genre and approach, as well as successful composition and design elements, and those that convey strong personal expressions of one kind or another. The Berkowitz gallery is pleased to share these remarkable watercolor paintings with the UM Dearborn campus and greater community! 313-593-5087
