Educational architect Mursalata Muhammad will gather the fragments of Claude Harvard’s life scattered about the internet, printed in an oral history, and rooted in her lived experiences with him. In the words of Mursalata, “This presentation is my attempt to tell you a story that brings together what is most worth telling in this moment.” Mursalata Muhammad was born and raised in Detroit. Muhammad is an English professor at Grand Rapids Community College. To honor Claude Harvard, she established the GRCC Bragg, Harvard, Muhammad Smith – Why We Can't Wait Scholarship Fund. Free

Global Glass: A Survey of Form and Function is a remarkable exhibition drawn from the extensive glass collection own by the University of Michigan- Dearborn. The exhibition surveys important artists and works created from the mid-1960s to the present. Global Glass examines both functional glass objects and pure sculptural forms that have often taken cues from other fine arts media and movements in the U.S. and internationally. Among the 56 artists represented are glass giants Harvey Littleton, Howard Ben Tré, Dale Chihuly, Ann Robinson, and Kate Vogel. Free

Holocaust Memorial Center To Unveil Special Exhibits in January

The Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus has announced its newest special exhibits which run January 13 through April 1, 2019. The special exhibits include “Jehovah’s Witnesses: Faith Under Fire,” “Rwanda: Personal Images” and “The Tragedy of War: Japanese American Interment.” The special exhibits are open Sunday through Friday and are free with museum admission or membership. Docent-led tours are available at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 17 and March 31. Docent-led tours also are available at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 4, March 11 and March 25. The Detroit Public Library is pleased to welcome artist Ana Candioti in her first Michigan exhibition of her series of paintings, “50 Years of Immortality: Art Exhibition Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” She began her series depicting the African diaspora back in 2000 when Candioti immersed herself in the Haitian culture of Miami. She continued to explore the African institutions, clothing, and religion of the city as well as Latin American communities, and has expertly portrayed the diverse and rich cultures through her portraits. The exhibit will be on view during normal library hours through February 2019. Free

NATURAL FORMS: Figurative and Landscape Works by Ann Kelly, Nora Venturelli, and Fran Wolok features figurative and landscape drawings and paintings inspired by human dynamics, animal forms, and natural scenery. Ann Kelly captures human and natural subjects using charcoal, pastel, and watercolor. Nora Venturelli mixed media paintings reveal layers and intricacies of the human form as well as human character. Fran Wolok captures the transient effects of light and color on natural forms in her acrylic and oil landscapes. Free

Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous is an international fellowship of people who have experienced difficulties in life as a result of our relationship to food and eating. Our program of recovery is based on the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. We make use of AA principles to gain freedom from addictive eating. There are no dues, fees, or weigh-ins at FA meetings. Membership is open to anyone who wants help with food. FREE
