This exhibition proactively engages with debates about restitution and the ethics of museums’ owning African heirlooms collected during the era of colonization. The investigation and research into 11 works of African art will be conducted publicly — visitors will have access to documents, photographs, and correspondence that will help UMMA develop a better understanding of each object’s history, grappling in real time with questions surrounding legal and ethical ownership of these artworks. Though complex, this project presents exciting opportunities for museum transparency and creating new pathways for relationship-building with partners in Africa and its diaspora. "Unsettling Histories" rejects the simple narratives of our collection's past and forces us to examine whose history we prioritize and why. Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s "Flay (James Madison)," this reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art, 1650-1850. The Squirrels is a fast-paced, witty dark comedy for our times (by the playwright of the Tony Award® nominated play Hand to God). Sciurus, the patriarch of a family of gray squirrels, has collected enough nuts to last ten winters. When a group of starving fox squirrels begs him to share his hoard of food, animosity erupts into ferocious war. The Squirrels is a wild, rollercoaster ride about a family of squirrels (yes, squirrels) as they face the challenges of climate change and the changes amongst their scurry – no creature comes out unscathed! 248-347-0003

Kate was stressed enough about her band, work, family, and friendships. Then a demon showed up. Now it’s worse. Taking influence from the zombie comedy of Shaun of the Dead and the noir comedy of The Nice Guys, Serenity Curse inserts comedy into the psychological horror of films like Jacob’s Ladder and It Follows. It tackles heavy subjects like depression with enough levity to make you laugh, enough heart to make you cry, and enough demonic possession to make you grip your armrest. Content Warning: Play contains violence, themes of depression and self-harm. N/A

SELFish is organized by MOCAD’s 2023–2024 Teen Council. SELFish explores the many different ways our teens across Southeastern Michigan communities convey their identity through creative means. Whether an abstract composition, an interpretive sculpture, or a traditional self-portrait, all art is an opportunity to better understand its creator. Through these modes of making we offer the question, what makes you, you? (313) 832-6622
