Amanda Palmer

Thu., March 21, 6 p.m.

Palmer's latest record, There Will Be No Intermission — her first solo record in seven years and a fully crowdfunded follow-up to 2012's fully crowdfunded Theatre Is Evil — is Palmer at her most demanding, which might be hard to believe based on everything we know about the 42-year-old artist. In the album's press release, its themes are described as spanning "miscarriage, cancer, grieving, and the darker side of parenthood." And to her credit, the album is about all those things, and quite obviously. On the record she also covers topics like young adult author Judy Blume, the rabbit hole that is social media, and loaning things to friends that were never returned to her. $35+

River Spirit

Sat., March 23, 4 p.m.

River Spirit's latest, Me I Fall, came out at the end of January. There's lots of textural space in each song, allowing every guitar riff, vocal note, and drum pattern to shine, or to sigh, or to flutter, or flair. The rhythms might be R&B, but the guitars are funk, while the vocals are neo-soul and the time-signatures are adventurous, or even nervy, all too eager to make some sharp left turns or sudden jumps. Often, it is, if nothing else, an entrancing listen.

In the mid-1950s, Lester was on the margins of the Louisiana blues scene. According to Rolling Stone . Lester's career took off when he found a seat next to Lightnin' Slim on a bus transporting Slim to an Excello recording session. At the studio, the scheduled harmonica player did not show up and Lester filled in. He soom followed Lightnin Slim to Pontiac Mi where he would make his home. $7.00
