IDK

Wed., Oct. 23, 7 p.m.
El Club 4114 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit Southwest

Buy Tickets$15-$17

While Kanye West is off galavanting around the country with his Sunday Service, claiming to be some MAGA-hat-wearing conduit of divine power or whatever, Maryland rapper IDK is conducting a different type of sermon. For his major label debut, Is He Real? the former incarcerated tutor and barber muses on the existence of God amid daily tragedy and injustice, an over-sexualized society, and the death of his mother, who died of AIDS in 2016, with contributions from Tyler The Creator, Pusha-T, JID, and DMX. Conceptual in its composition and intimate and challenging though its songwriting, Much of the record’s spiritual struggle can be reduced to the opening monologue delivered by a child when asked what they think happens when we die: “You wake up from your dream because God isn’t fucking real.” Kemba is also on the bill.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Motown — the musical institution that changed the world. While Detroit has been celebrating this milestone anniversary all year long, it is the five-day Motown A-Go-Go event that is the most jam-packed, star-studded of them all. The event kicks-off on Wednesday with a welcome party at the Hotel St. Regis with music from Drew Shultz & the Broken Habits, Miss Cubie, and Detroit native and recent the Voice contestant, Beth Griffith Manley. The event continues Thursday through Sunday at Bert’s Warehouse Theater with performances by the Marvelettes, the Vandellas, the Contours, the Miracles, the Wylie Girls, the Dynamics, JJ Barnes, Kim Weston, as well as the Supremes’ Scherrie Payne and Susaye Green.
