King Tuff

Thu., May 24, 8 p.m.

What do you get when you cross Ty Segall’s former project the Muggers, a Fender Stratocaster, and an itching malaise? Why, that’d be Sub Pop Records’ neo-psychedelia darling Kyle Thomas, aka King Tuff, who has returned with a new elevating installment of his intergalactic garage-rock wizardry. Less glam with less fuzz than Black Moon Spell, Tuff’s The Other finds the Vermont rocker tapping into jazzier influences that up the ante on his groovy factor. Thematically, his fifth studio record tackles everything from depression, global warming, and humanity’s reliance on technology — all against a shimmering backdrop of brass arrangements and sexy guitar riffs. $15-$18

The Decemberists

Fri., May 25, 8 p.m.

For some, the precociousness of baroque-pop outfit the Decemberists might be hard to swallow. Frontman Colin Maloy’s heavy-handed vocabulary — paired with obscure folklore and the warbling vocals — has solidified the Decemberists as indie’s favorite nerds. The five-piece will be on the road in support of their eighth studio record I’ll Be Your Girl, which finds our wayfaring eccentric pioneers wielding synth sounds and a simplified lyrical toolbox. Maloy says the band’s recent effort is an accumulation of post-election anxiety, despair, and absurdity which, for the Decemberists, follows suit with what they do best — captivating audiences with their whimsy. $35-$45

The ongoing Dinner Show program presented periodically at PJ's Lager House continues apace on Friday, May 25, 2018 with the appearance of Vernon Tonges (also known in some circles as Spoo Willoughby). This event is cunningly timed to launch the holiday weekend for the downtown office crowd, starting at 5:30pm and will wrap up about 7:30pm. Mr. Tonges has played coffeehouses and beer joints along the Chicago-Detroit axis for decades, amassing along the way a sizeable back catalog of catchy-yet-jaundiced musical confections reflecting through a cracked kaleidoscope a variety of abandoned 20th Century song stylings bereft of cheap sentiment.
