Andy T's Urban Vision is the first mid-career retrospective of Detroit-based installation artist Andrew W. Thompson, popularly known as “Andy T.” As a sculptor, Thompson gives new life to discarded objects such as tires, grocery bags, plastic bottles, and mailing envelopes, thereby integrating questions of environmental, social, and economic sustainability into the context of art. Treating art as a “fundamental life-organizing principle,” the artist observes, researches, and interprets how everyday items circulate, shape, and express social beliefs and cultural customs. 313-593-5087

This exhibition proactively engages with debates about restitution and the ethics of museums’ owning African heirlooms collected during the era of colonization. The investigation and research into 11 works of African art will be conducted publicly — visitors will have access to documents, photographs, and correspondence that will help UMMA develop a better understanding of each object’s history, grappling in real time with questions surrounding legal and ethical ownership of these artworks. Though complex, this project presents exciting opportunities for museum transparency and creating new pathways for relationship-building with partners in Africa and its diaspora. Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s "Flay (James Madison)," this reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art, 1650-1850. Fragments in Order presents three original works by Lena Granger. Choreographed during three distinct time periods over the last eight years, these works serve as a physical archive that preserve the feelings and experiences of the choreographer and performers during each time of creation. When presented chronologically, the audience is invited to witness the evolution of an artist and individual through the personal stories shared. While completely unique conceptually, each work sits within the commonality of exploring what it looks like to wrestle within and through a difficult state of being; eventually reaching a hopeful and liberated reality. ‪(313) 749-8844‬

The Stamelos Gallery Center is proud to share Piece by Piece: Recent Work from Regional Fiber Artists with the campus and greater community. Fiber lends itself to an exploration of the potency of being human. The familiarity of a frayed edge, a softness to comfort us, or a thickness to protect us; fabric reminds us of how we need to be held. It takes us back to the ways we care for each other, the ways our ancestors have blended need and beauty by weaving, knotting, spinning, dyeing, and making for centuries. This medium is not only artistic in practicum,… 313-593-5087
