Demi Lovato
At the Palace of Auburn Hills on March 13
How do people get to play the Palace so early in their career nowadays? Also, what’s with all these pop stars having “philanthropist” next to their name on Wiki? Lovato was in that Camp Rock thing, by the way.
Justin Timberlake
At the Palace of Auburn Hills on July 28
You’re not fooling us, Timberlake. You might be funny with Jimmy Fallon, and you might think that you’re George Michael, but you’ll always be the kid from *NSYNC to us. Come to think of it, George Michael will always be the guy from Wham.
Karmin
At St. Andrew’s Hall on February 8
One to watch, this band. Karmin has broken into the top 20 with the “Brokenhearted” single, they look the part and they’re getting attention. Catch them at St. Andy’s before they blow up.
Katy Perry
At the Palace of Auburn Hills on August 11
Perry says that she’s out of her “I Kissed a Girl” phase now, and is an altogether more serious artist. So on the video for “Roar,” from the recent Prism album, she dresses like a female Tarzan and sits in the jungle with big cats. A commentary on the continuing decline of the rain forests? Probably not.
Lady Gaga
At the Joe Louis on May 17
Will she wear meat? Will she sing those songs she sings? What will she do? Who knows? But her Artpop album got mixed reviews so you can bet it’ll be something scandalous. What? She’s putting out a record with Tony Bennett? Actually, that’s very cool.
OneRepublic
At the DTE Energy Music Theatre on June 21
Not One Direction, but the other “One.” These guys have been around since 2003 and are now in their mid-thirties, so it’s more of a man-band now.
Robin Thicke
At the Fox Theatre on March 12
We know him as Miley’s twerk-board. Apparently, he makes music too.
The Sing-Off
At the Royal Oak Music Theatre on March 19
A tv show that sees Jewel and Ben Folds do the same thing that other people are doing on American Idol, The X-Factor and The Voice. Want to see some of the contestants up close before they disappear into obscurity? Now’s your chance.
Austin Mahone
At the Royal Oak Music Theatre on March 2
The next Justin Beiber, by all accounts. Poor kid.
Bruno Mars
At the Palace of Auburn Hills on June 18
Ladies, you’re all beautiful, “Just the way you are.” Well said, Mars. Although, have you ever people-watched at Boogie Fever at closing time?
Lorde
At the Fillmore on March 16
Fair play – this girl has quite a voice and style of her own. Once she ditches the “she’s only fucking 17?” factor, she’ll be set.
Miley Cyrus
At the Palace of Auburn Hills on April 12
What do you know? Having the “Achy Breaky Heart” guy for a dad and being pushed into the spotlight at an early age is likely to damage a child’s psyche. Whoda thunkit? Cyrus is wild and zany, and the people who built her up are now tearing her down. Not us though. You go and offend those parents, Montana.
