11 criminally-underrated spots to spend Sweetest Day in metro Detroit

Most of us are in agreement that Sweetest Day is essentially BS, invented by Big Candy to push sweets. In fact, if you're not from Detroit, Cleveland, or parts of the Northeast, you've probably never heard of this pseudo holiday. Still, maybe you just want an excuse to stuff your sweetheart's face (and let's face yours as well) with all manner of chocolate, pastries, and other goodies. We won't judge you for it. Here are a few low key ideas to observe this Sweetest of days without going overboard.

Astoria Pastry Shop, 541 Monroe St.
Because there's really no bad time of year to indulge in baklava, bird's nests, or pistachio baskets. Astoria is open until midnight most nights, til 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Tour the gorgeous Guardian Building and have a cup of coffee at 500 Griswold St. You and your special someone love the gorgeous detailing that make up the Art Deco Guardian Building. Why not spend some time inside, snap some photos, and then enjoy a nice latte in the Rowland Cafe in the lobby.

With choices that span the flavor spectrum like strawberry shortbread, pineapple coconut, and Michigan-centric Superman ice cream-inspired, you and your sweetie will have no problem getting your sugar fix.

Kresge Court
Grab wine and cheese at Kresge Court in the DIA, 5200 Woodward Ave., If you are a resident of Wayne, Oakland, or Macomb counties you can get into the museum for free. Once you've roamed Rivera Court and gazed at a Picasso, swing by Kresge Court, one of Detroit's hidden gems for intimate conversations over wine and cheese.

When you enter this West Village bake shop, you and your love bug will be overwhelmed by its sweet aroma, chill vibe, and cheery staff. Grab a slice of seasonal, fresh-made pie and you'll be in pie heaven. For later, you can always take home some cookies or head across the street to Parker Street Market, where you'll find plenty of locally-made Pete's Chocolate Co. candies.
