As we were filling out concert listings, we thought it was curious that the Fillmore's online calendar had not been updated beyond rapper Tech N9ne's concert scheduled for June 3. Now we know why.

The Fillmore is due to close temporarily this summer to undergo restoration. According to a press release, the main auditorium ceiling will be the focus of the restorative project and is set to be completed by October and will resume with a full concert schedule starting with the Wayne Kramer and the MC5 anniversary concert, MC50, on Oct. 27.

"Live Nation and Forbes Management, the building owners, are excited to work on this paint restoration together," the press release said.

According to Crain's Detroit, the temporary closure will lay off 180 employees. However, LiveNation revealed that the closure will not affect the employment of the venue's full-time staff come fall.

When the building was erected in 1925, what we now know as the Fillmore was called the State Theatre. It was renamed the Palms-State Theatre in ‘37 and shortened to Palms Theatre in ‘49. It wasn’t until ‘82 that it switched back to the State, and in 2007 it was dubbed the Fillmore Detroit.

This will be the first time the ceiling has been repainted in the venue's 93 year history.
