Detroit's D.S. Sense premieres new video

Posted By on Sat, Mar 14, 2015 at 10:59 AM

Deidre Smith, aka D.S.Sense, started singing at the age of three, but everything changed when a cousin introduced her to hip-hop with a J.J. Fad 45 record.

“And he put it on my little Sesame Street player, and he spun it. I said ‘oh, I’m going to be a part of this,'" Smith says in a release. "It was new to my ears, new to my house, it was a new energy, and I felt like I could really relate to it. I didn’t know what it was, I just knew that, ‘Oh OK, yeah I love jazz and I love soul, but this is my voice. I’m going to find my voice in this hip-hop.'"

Smith is one of 17 artists from 15 nations to appear on a new mixtape called World Hip Hop Women: SoundSIStem presented by Nomadic Wax and World Hip Hop Market, mixed by Dj LaJedi, and hosted by hosted by poet jessica Care moore. The mixtape is available as a free download here.
