A very brief chat with Babyface

Posted By on Wed, Jun 25, 2014 at 12:23 PM

Babyface (Kenneth Edmonds) is so softly spoken in conversation that the phone line actually struggles to pick up his voice. No word of a lie, the technology doesn’t yet exist that can capture a sentence spoken by Babyface and transmit it across the country. He’s performing with Toni Braxton at Chene Park this weekend. The pair had previously recorded the Love, Marriage, Divorce album together so we figured we’d have a word with him. “A” word is about what we got

Metro Times: After recording the Love, Marriage, Divorce album together, you and Toni Braxton have quite the working relationship now
Babyface: I feel like I’ve known her since she was born. I discovered her, so I guess I’ve always been a part of her life.

MT: Do you like coming to Detroit?
Babyface: Yeah, of course. Motown.

MT: It’s been a while since you put out a solo album
Babyface: I’m working on one right now. Hopefully it’ll be out next year.

MT: What do you have planned for Detroit?
Babyface: Toni and I will do some things together. Toni’s always fun to watch, she has a great show.

MT: When this show’s over, what’s next for you?
Babyface: We’re taking this year out, and there’s talk of a TV show.

Babyface and Toni Braxton play at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 at Chene Park; 2600 Atwater St., Detroit; 313-393-7128; $74-$168.
