City Slang: Katie Grace at Smalls

Posted By on Mon, Aug 13, 2012 at 1:41 PM

On Sunday evening, there was perhaps 20 people inside Smalls in Hamtramck to see Arizona band Tramps & Thieves, and some of those people seemed to be the band’s family. Still, that band put on a sound if slightly dull show later in the evening.

Far better was our own Katie Grace who, armed with just an acoustic guitar and standing alone on stage, was able to ignore the lack of punters and still put in a stellar shift.

Our best bad girl played everything we’d want to hear from her recent album, plus a couple of new songs. She laughs at her own jokes between songs and seems to be having a whale of a time, and she plays a few new tunes too. “Let’s Cut to the Chase” is undoubtedly the highlight.

Grace is an awesome guitar player, an amazing singer and a great songwriter too. She’s one of our great talents, and more people should have been at Smalls on Sunday to witness her continuing to blossom.
