City Slang: Pleasure Seekers to reform for DMAs

Details of this year’s Detroit Music Awards have been released, and the big news is that Suzi Quatro will be honored with some sort of lifetime achievement award. She will perform live at the ceremony, both as a solo artist and with her sisters in a re-formed Pleasure Seekers.

The event takes place on Friday, April 27 from 6 p.m. At the Fillmore in Detroit. Tickets are $20. Saint Andrew’s Hall and Detroit Dog Rescue will also be honored, while other musicians performing include the fantastic Amy Gore & Her Valentines as well as Gore's band with Nikki Corvette, Gorevette, plus Black Milk, Ben Sharkey, Planet D Nonet, and Paulina Jayne.

According to the press release, “Grosse Pointe-born sisters Suzi, Patti, Nanci and Arlene Quatro formed Detroit’s first and most famous all-girl garage-rock group the Pleasure Seekers in 1964.  After just a few weeks practice, the band dared Dave Leone to give them a slot at his popular teen nightclub, The Hideout, in Detroit. He put them on stage two weeks later, and they never looked back, gaining momentum in the burgeoning and exploding Detroit music community and playing concerts and clubs with Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, and Iggy Pop.”

”One of the most important female rock figures ever, Suzi Quatro started performing with her sisters in the Pleasure Seekers when she was just 15.  From there, Quatro basically invented the leather-clad rocker chick persona Joan Jett and Chrissie Hynde rode to fame, albeit overseas, where she achieved a string of number one hits in Europe throughout the 1970's and early 80's.  Her American fortunes changed in the late '70s, when she had a short-lived, semi-regular stint on the sitcom Happy Days as the guitar-playing, sassy Leather Tuscadero.”

Like or loathe the DMAs, the Pleasure Seekers alone make this an event worth catching.
