Today in History: Nov. 9 was a big day for flight 110 years ago

Posted By on Sun, Nov 9, 2014 at 10:11 AM

A century and a decade ago on this day, Nov. 9 1904, the first flight to last more than five minutes took place. The Wright brothers had been working on it for a while – flight, that is – and their efforts were paying off.

Brother Wilbur piloted the flight that covered nearly three miles in almost four circles. Nearly a month later on Dec. 1, brother Orville accomplished the same task.
Before the year was out, the brothers would had accrued nearly an hour of flight time, taking 105 flights. By the next October, they'd be in the air for over a half hour at a time.

Huffman Prairie, the place where they practiced and experimented is still largely the same to this day. Now, it's part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, which is connected to Wright-Patternson Air Force Base in Ohio.
