Best Cultural Institution to Defend: John's Carpet House

Frederick Street between St. Aubin and Dubois streets

For years, John's Carpet House was a joyful outdoor party on land owned and maintained by Albert "Big Pete" Barrow. Anybody who loves the blues and wanted to picnic could show up and expect a sun-splashed hootenanny. The trouble started in July 2014, when city officials tried to shut down the event, and began issuing fines. This year, Barrow tells us that Detroit City Council has given its approval for the free summer jam to continue. Let the good times keep rolling!
