Year of the play

Who Wants to be a Famous Playwright? Apparently nobody, or so it seems to Troy Richard, producer at Detroit’s Zeitgeist Theater. Richard is trying to put together the theater’s entire 2001 season with works by local playwrights. He’ll even throw in $1,000 toward the production of each play he chooses, and even direct it if the writer wants.

But, no takers, so Richard appealed to the Hot & the Bothered to get out the word. There must be some hot new playwrights around here, and we’re bothered they haven’t jumped at this chance.

"I just didn’t know if there were playwrights out there," Richard says. "People say, ‘I’ve got a play’ – well, drop it off, I’d love to read it. But nothing ever comes of it."

Richard is trying to fill six slots for the season and, at this point, at least one of those is going to be one of his own works. He’ll be reading all the plays submitted and choosing ones he wants to produce. Insider tip – he prefers avant-garde, absurdist and experimental work.

Now then, who wants to be a famous playwright? Send a copy of your play to Zeitgeist, 2661 Michigan Ave., Detroit 48216, or call 313-965-9192 to find out more.
