Southwest Detroit gets three colorful new murals from Mexican artists

Earlier, we mentioned the Inner State Gallery and Mexico City's Fifty24MX were bringing 11 Mexican artists to Detroit for a joint show in honor of Cinco de Mayo. As part of the show, the gallery brought three artists to paint murals in Southwest Detroit. On Friday, we checked out the progress on the murals.

Two of the paintings are on Springwells Street:


Above, artist Saner is seen painting a mural depicting four figures wearing animal masks at Beebe’s 2 Supermercado at 1421 Springwells St., Detroit. Though Beebe's sign prominently advertises beer and wine, it's more than a typical liquor store, featuring a small produce section and a meat counter with chorizo and other selections.


Marka27 recently completed this mural of a robotic woman on the side of El Asador Steakhouse, 1312 Springwells St., Detroit. We stopped in for lunch and spoke with owner and chef Luis Garza, who said he was excited about the facelift, and talked about installing lights on his building to highlight the artwork at night. (Also, we enjoyed the enchiladas verdes.)


And finally, we met up with artist Jesús Benitez, at work on a pair of murals on the side of the nonprofit cultural center Garage Cultural (which we've written about before) at 3439 Livernois, Detroit. Benitez said he liked Detroit so far — in some ways, he said, it reminded him of Mexico City. We liked the RoboCop reference!
