See the city on two wheels with these Detroit-based bike rides

Jul 16, 2018 at 2:00 pm

Cycling is an all-season sport, but there's something special about pedaling your way through the city on a warm summer night. And just like every bike has two wheels, every cyclist should have a buddy (or a few). From morning to midnight, there is a group ready to ride with you if you look in the right spot.

Here are a selection of some of Detroit's best bike rides.

Slow Roll

Monday nights at 6pm, weekly origin location TBA
Perhaps Detroit’s most well-known weekly ride, Slow Roll is a family friendly bike event which takes a slower pace for more casual riders. Slow Roll riders can be seen (or heard) from a mile away with their decked out bikes and bumpin’ beats. Meeting at different locations throughout Detroit every Monday at 6pm, Slow Roll is a great way to see the city from a new perspective.

Midnight Marauders
Thursday nights at 10pm, weekly origin location TBA
Not every rider wants a slow pace, which is why the Midnight Marauders weekly Thursday ride is better left for the bold. Meeting at 10pm and hitting the pavement promptly at 11pm, the Marauders promise to bomb through the city streets at a left-for-dead pace of 15-20 mph. Finishing up just in time for last call, the Midnight Marauders enjoy catching up with a cold beer after a hard late-night ride.

Why wait for everyone else to get up to take a tour of Detroit? Every Saturday at 6am, the Beat the Train bike ride starts the day off with a leisurely but brisk cruise through some of Detroit's finest landmarks. Corktown, Belle Isle, Heidelberg Street and Mexican Town are just some of the locations riders will find themselves at during this ride. Beat the Train will encompass about 30 to 35 miles, and concludes with a group breakfast at Los Galanes in Mexican Town. No need to worry about being left behind, Beat the Train welcomes both new and experienced riders.

Fixed Friday
Fridays at 6:15pm until October, 1824 Springwells St 48209

Don't be dismayed, Fixed Friday riders will still welcome you. On the last Friday of the month, Fixed Friday riders join ranks with Detroit Critical Mass to pedal out with an even larger posse.

Biking Belle Isle
Time TBD, Belle Isle Park 2 Inselruhe 48206
Why walk Belle Isle, when you can bike it? Furthermore, why just bike when you can also learn about your finances while doing so? AARP and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources have gotten together to provide this very service. The event will begin with a presentation by AARP staff about a variety of important topics, before moving into a BikeFit 101 course that will enlighten participants on bike safety tips while taking them on a guided ride through the beautiful Belle Isle. Dates and times are always changing, so call ahead to confirm your visit.

Cylclonauts
Various times and locations
The full moon isn't just for werewolves. The Cyclonauts are a Femme, Trans, Queer, Women's (FTQW) bike club that also enjoys a little lunar action. The Cyclonauts spacey vibe sees them mainly take to the streets beneath the light of a full moon, with their next Moon Ride set for July 27. The group also offers events and programs such as Hangar Bay for fixing things up, and Co-Pilot bike cadets looking for an experienced mentor for their trek. Keep an eye on the lunar schedule and get ready for a moonlight adventure.
