Second Place - Black and White

Kelly Hornfeld says that while she was shooting a series of family portraits, what excited her young subjects most was seeing her go behind the black cloth of her 4x5 camera. This photo is part of the project 21-year-old Hornfeld developed for a class at Michigan State University. The soon-to-be graduate (she’ll receive her bachelor’s of fine arts in December) used a tripod and timer for the shot, allowing herself to be included in the image. The toddler in front is her cousin, enjoying the effects of a bubble machine at her second birthday party. "I want to document the exploration of interactions and relationships that compose my identity," Hornfeld says about her recent works. She says she creates the mood for each scene through the use of body language, expression and lighting, elements that are sometimes planned, but often spontaneous.
