The latest addition to the festive happenings in Campus Martius is the Rainbow City Roller Rink — and it's so friggin' cute!
In partnership with Library Street Collective and artist duo FriendsWithYou, the recent press release describes Rainbow City Roller Rink as a "surrealist" and "inflatable wonderland" made up of floating, geometric sculptures both suspended above the rink and meandering throughout the space, looking every bit like a still from Katamari Damacy.
The installation will open starting Friday, Nov. 30 through Jan. 27th inside 1001 Woodward Ave. overlooking Campus Martius. The 60-person capacity rink will be free to visitors, though it has yet to be determined as to whether or not there will be a fee for skate and locker rental.
As of yesterday, the rink was still under minor construction, as the striped floor underwent finishing touches. The central character in Rainbow City Roller Rink's adorable inflatable squad is the 30-foot rotating head that harkens back to roadside carnivals and totem imagery. The idea? to trigger an "iconic and childlike awareness," according to Library Street Collective.
Rainbow City Roller Rink will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 2 p.m.-9 p.m. and is first come, first served. More information is available at RainbowCityDetroit.com. Get our top picks for the best events in Detroit every Thursday morning. Sign up for our events newsletter.
