Thanks to the wonder of technology, music over the past few decades has become available to the masses in new and increasingly smaller forms. Yet, for many music lovers, nothing beats the austere beauty of vinyl, and the true collector never passes up a chance to hunt for that much-sought-after record.
The Magic Stick Record Swap offers just such an opportunity. A white elephant record trade-cum-holiday rock ’n’ roll extravaganza, the record swap gives everyone from novice vinyl collectors to true aficionados the chance — albeit a small one — to stumble across a vinyl gem. All you have to do is bring a playable, gift-wrapped LP to add to the pile, and then pull one out to keep for yourself. Sure, the chances of finding a rare collectible are slim, but, according to Majestic Complex promoter (and the brains behind the swap) Greg Baise, that’s half the point.
“Collecting vinyl is about the fun of the pursuit. People have made some really great finds just digging through the dollar bin at the record store,” Baise says. “And there’s an air of authenticity to vinyl. It’s really the best musical entertainment value around, which makes it worth the effort.”
Performing at the swap are medieval metal band Wolfbait, Dead Milkmen tribute band Serrated Edge and DJ Gutterball. Rounding out the lineup is local comic and self-described media whore Corey Hall, appearing more for the sake of holiday spirit than because of an interest in vinyl.
“Vinyl’s a good thing. It’s black, it’s circular, and it makes a much better Frisbee than iPods. They’re just not as aerodynamic,” Hall says.
Those, like Hall, who only appreciate records as far as they can throw them are still promised a night of great music and comic repartee. And those with the hope of making a great find only need to grab an old record from the parents’ attic, make a swap and see what’s under the wrapping.
