01 FRI • MUSIC MHz — New Wave meets punk. Frank Black pummels Jerry Casale and the MHz are what is left. A truly unique component of Detroit rock, the MHz are hard to pin down. Can’t find ’em, can’t get their photo or a press release. They could care less about press — which is partly why we must suggest that you check this out! They are different, they are intense and they one of the few truly devil-may-care shows going on this Halloween season. If you like rock — you’ll like them MHz. At the Lager House 1254 Michigan Ave. Call 313-961-4668 for details.
02 SAT • MUSIC Larry Nozero — In addition to leading a fine group including Buddy Budson on piano and Don Swindell on trumpet, expect this Detroit-scene veteran to play some music with a personal message. The saxophonist and flutist’s latest record, Four for Three (Dominic Records), is a salute to the late Detroit pianist Eddie Russ and his tunes. "Eddie had the ability to refine a melody with just the right notes, not too many, not too few," says Nozero of his partner in the ’70s group Mixed Bag. At Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, 20501 Livernois, Detroit, 313-345-6300. Nozero is also in concert Nov. 6 in the Jazz Forum Series at Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church, 17150 Maumee. Call 313-961-1714 for reservations.
02 SAT • MUSIC The Real Kids — Power pop from Boston, the Real Kids are back for stumble down memory lane with "Bookie’s Night": a remembrance of the good ol’ days of Detroit punk, when liberty spikes weren’t seen in Pepsi ads and the only "alternative" music was the stuff being heard in dirty downtown clubs, The Real Kids were doin’ it. With thundering guitars and garage-rock prowess, this foursome is the epitome of rock integrity. At Paycheck’s Lounge, 2932 Caniff, Hamtramck. Call 313-874-0909 for further lowdown.
02 SAT • MUSIC HANK THOMPSON — We’ve all got time for "one more round" when it comes to Hank Thompson. This reigning king of Western Swing is still in full forward motion and as active as ever. After a litany of accolades that lay in his honky-tonk wake, you’d think that this songwriting icon might opt for a bit a rest. "Rest? I get my best rest on the road!" says Hank. So he’s back, for your toe-tappin’ pleasure at the Wayne-Ford Civic League 1645 N. Wayne Rd., just south of Ford Road in Westland. To order tickets call AM 1480 WSDS at 734-484-1480. He will be joined by very special guests Bones Maki & The Sun Dodgers, Blue Velvet and the Radio Gang, stars of the WSDS Huron Valley Jamboree.
30 WED • THEATER The Rocky Horror Show — A benefit performance of this cult classic makes the fun that much sweeter. Androgyny, debauchery and murder are as hilarious as can be, with the original stage version of The Rocky Horror Show, starring local talents and unforgettable tunes. The Sweet Transvestite invites you to do the Time Warp again (and have a little hedonistic enjoyment while we’re at it.) Proceeds go to AIDS Partnership Michigan. At St. Dunstan's Theatre Guild of Cranbrook, 400 Lone Pine Rd., Bloomfield Hills; call 248-644-0527 for tickets.
