Thanks to director Sara Driver's (When Pigs Fly, 1993) Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat we have a better understanding of the galvanizing graffiti artist’s most impactful years.
Before he was “Samo,” 1970’s New York City was Basquiat’s unsuspecting canvas. Comprised of archival footage, rare interviews, and an accompanying soundtrack pulled straight from the era, Boom for Real will screen at Cinema Detroit followed by a Q & A with producer Rachel Dengiz and critic and curator Carlo McCormick.
'Boom For Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat' screening begins at 7:30 p.m. with Q & A following on Friday, June 15 at Cinema Detroit; 4126 Third St., Detroit; 313-482-9028; Tickets are $10.
