More commonly associated with Southern California, lowriding culture is set to be celebrated in Detroit with a couple events this week.
On Wednesday, April 29, the Scarab Club will host a gallery talk for their latest exhibit,
Lowriding: From Crenshaw to Woodward. Show curator and photographer Erik Howard will join some of the show's participating artists at 6 p.m. to discuss lowriding and its cultural impact. The show has a closing reception on Saturday, May 16th from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
“The cars might have been built here in Detroit, but they went all over the world, and the car customization cultures eventually made it back here,” Howard
told Hemmings Daily.
And on Sunday, May 3, Southwest Detroit will host its annual "Blessing of the Lowriders" event following the Cinco de Mayo parade (not your typical car show — read up on last year's event
here). This year's event will be held from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at the intersection of Livernois Avenue and Otis Street in Southwest Detroit, and feature performances by the Motor City Rockerz b-boy crew.
