Here's the fake Shinola ad from our 'Orbit' takeover issue

In case you missed it — in anticipation of the Orbit Magazine Anthologyout Sept. 1 on Wayne State University Press, we decided to hand over nine pages of this week's issue to the staff of the long-defunct local magazine (and former Metro Times rivals) to see what they would come up with. The results didn't disappoint — the issue features a 2015 update of Orbit's old "Blast Off" page, a look at "Detropolis 2065," an exposé on Detroit's hipster problem, and a pair of music offerings from Sonic Boom editor Liz Warner.

Orbit was equally beloved and maligned for its no-holds-barred, equal-opportunity brand of satire, and in that spirit the staffers sprinkled their takeover content with some very topical fake ads. Since it shuttered at the end of the '90s, one has to wonder what the staff of Orbit would have thought about more recent Detroit developments like Shinola. (We can probably rest assured that Shinola probably would not have advertised in Orbit.) Check out the fake "Shitola" ad below.

Orbit fans might recall that the ad is a throwback to a recurring gag about "Blocky," the "Toy Sensation that's sweeping the nation."
