Ford celebrates lift of Saudi Arabia ban on women driving with striking ad

In a televised royal decree on Tuesday, the government of Saudi Arabia announced it would be lifting its longstanding ban on women driving in June 2018.

The news was met with celebration from Saudi women and supporters, some of whom have been protesting the ban since 1990.

Today, Ford Motor Co. tweeted a stark yet striking ad in solidarity with the move. Like a lot of great auto ads, it operates under the aesthetic philosophy of "less is more."

The image shows a woman's eyes in a rearview mirror positioned over a dark background, evoking a veil. Below, the text: "Welcome to the driver's seat."
