It all started 29 years ago with a dozen people at Bar Thom’s on Grand River in Detroit. Over the years, it has been at many bars, and the traveling celebration has even spawned imitators. But there can only be one Babe Ruth Birthday Party, the one started by Navin Field Grounds Crew honcho Tom Derry back in 1988. Corktown sports bar Nemo's will be taken over by fans of the Sultan of Swat, who would be turning the almost impossibly old age of 122 that night. And with facts, stories, and images of the Bambino festooned all over the place, you’ll never have seen so many “Babes” in one bar.

The fun starts at 7:14 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, and runs until closing time at Nemo's Bar, 1384 Michigan Ave., Detroit; baberuthbirthdayparty.com.
