News has emerged that Deathlok, the Marvel comics cyborg, will make his first live action appearance on the TV show Agents of Shield.
This has us excited, not least because of the character’s Detroit connections. As we wrote in the cover story Dark Stars, Deathlok was co-created by Detroit native Rich Buckler. Since then, a number of characters have worked under the Deathlok name, but the first was Luther Manning, a soldier from Detroit.
In that cover story, Buckler said, "He was born in Detroit because I was. I guess that shows how closely I related to that character. Deathlok seemed to just spring to life on his own. He was both alive and dead, human and monster. The theme of technology robbing him of his humanity was an important part of it. I think that concept was very relevant back then, and probably is even more so today. He was an experimental 'super soldier' created by the military and programmed for violence and destruction. Not exactly a superhero, more of a modern-day rebel who was a victim of a 'Frankenstein technology.'"
The Deathlok that will appear on Agents of Shield will not be Manning, which is a shame. Still, this is a character created by a Detroiter, so we can still celebrate. This Deathlok will be Mike Peterson, played by J. August Richards. Last seen, Peterson pretty much exploded so he’s all set for cybernetic reconstruction.
The episode, the thirteenth of season 1, will air on February 4 and will be called “T.R.A.C.K.S.”
