Canvassing The Hood

A roundup of talent from Glenn Barr and a class show at Cranbrook

Lyric 2012

What: Group show curated by local star artist Glenn Barr.

Where: 323 East Gallery, 323 E. Fourth St., Royal Oak; 248-246-9544;

When: Opening reception 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 21; displays through May 16.

For the second incarnation of his music-themed group exhibition, Lyric, prominent underground artist Glenn Barr had just one requirement for the participating artists: that the dimensions of each piece be 12 inches square. The size is a nod to the dimensions of record covers, a size that has best served some of the most iconic images in pop culture, from the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band to the Clash's London Calling. The hodgepodge of international and local artists brought their diverse range of styles — from graffiti to pop, surrealism to lowbrow — to bear on the classic cover size, giving a visual interpretation of their favorite albums, songs or lyrics. According to Barr: "This exhibition will illuminate the artist's personal transcription from a song lyric to canvas." Participating artists include Ron Zakrin, Tom Thewes, Mark Heggie, BASK, Mark Dancy, Davin Brainard, John Dunivant, April Segedi and more.
