Following Michael Jackman’s blog last week lambasting P.J. O’Rourke for his “How to Save Detroit” article, my own mom, visiting from the UK, offered a tip.
Driving to a restaurant on Friday night (January 10), mom said, “It’s no wonder Detroit’s in trouble – look how many Christmas lights are still on.”
She’s kinda right too. First of all, keeping your Christmas lights on following the twelfth day of Christmas (Jan 6) is bad luck. Four days over the deadline might not sound like a lot, but bad luck is bad luck. Nobody wants that shit.
If you didn’t have time to take them down (believe me, I understand), just quit turning them on at night. Easy.
A bit of British thrift wouldn’t go amiss. Save a bit of power now and it might help later. Or, as they say in England, take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.
Thanks mom.
