In this week's issue, we wrote about the 1217 Griswold building that flanks the west side of Capitol Park and the residents who now have about two weeks to vacate their spacious lofts.
The building, purchased by Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert's real estate arm last November, has a myriad of issues, as shown in a fire marshal's report from last month. Gilbert-connected Bedrock Real Estate Services was unable to land a residential occupancy permit and says the way to fix the problems is through an all-out renovation.
A letter sent by Bedrock on Jan. 28 gave the roughly two dozen residents 30 days to vacate the property, with an offer of $2,000 for moving expenses and a discounted stay at Greektown Hotel.
Real Estate blog Curbed Detroit offered a glimpse inside some of 1217's lofts today; the photo essay shows how residents transformed their spaces however they pleased. It's definitely worth a look. But if you'd like to see the building up close, residents have scheduled an open house and estate sale this weekend.
