Tim McHugh had no choice. Faced with the reality of half of his band, the Atomic Numbers, touring indefinitely with Detroit's pop sensation Brendan Benson, he did what most songwriter's would do: spent a year holed up in a room and wrote an album worth of material. "I really meant it to be a solo thing," McHugh explains, "but Jeff called me up one day and said, 'There's this band out of Saginaw with a few friends of ours that I saw last week open for (Detroit's) the Fags - I think we should get together with these guys.'" The old friends were Jason & Andy Reed of the Haskels and one rehearsal later - the Rioteers were born. The result is a sound not far from the power-pop/rock sound of the Atomic Numbers or the Haskels. What may be different this time could be in the spirit behind the Rioteers. "Guided by Voices," Jeff explains, "taught us that you could write a 23 second song that rocks you without all the extra crap." McHugh defines what he's writing in a different way. "Rock anthems for losers," he says laughing. But Jason sums it all up best, perhaps, when he says, "this is so much FUN!"
