We built this city

Wouldn’t it be nice to stroll along West Jefferson and see a monument that honors the working men and women who built Detroit? The Michigan Labor History Society thinks so. That is why the organization — along with Detroit-area unions — is asking artists to submit designs for a sculpture that will sit between the UAW-Ford Training Center and Hart Plaza and will symbolize the city’s rich labor history. The top three designers will receive $5,000 stipends to create models to be unveiled Aug. 28. A breakfast and orientation meeting for interested artists will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 10, at the Veterans Memorial Building, 151 W. Jefferson.
