Waiting for the fall

This two-story house at 4509-4511 Avery, in the historic Woodbridge neighborhood, has been a strain on residents’ eyes for as long as most can remember. Peter Jablonski, who lives across the street, says the house has been abandoned for at least 19 years — as long as he has lived on the block. “The porch fell off about five years ago after people started stealing bricks. Some guy came with a truck and took all of them,” says Jablonski. Officials at the City of Detroit Buildings and Safety Engineering Department could not tell the Abandoned Structure Squad the house’s status regarding demolition. Maybe they are just hoping the place will fall down all by itself.
