Poor New Yorkers, all mixed up and out of the know. Seems as though the White Stripes (Detroit’s very own) rocked the Big Apple to its core lately, with music and scandal playing equal parts in their trembling unto fame. A recent issue of The New Yorker magazine featured a cool drawing of the hot duo (in red and white, but of course) with the caption “The Detroit sibling rockers the White Stripes, at the Bowery Ballroom.” Now Time magazine has gone all investigative on the oh-so-photogenic, sonically advantaged pair, outing the kids (Jack and Meg White) as former man and wife, not brother and sister after all (whew, too close for comfort, even in Gotham). Too bad everybody in the Motor City already knew (quoting the time.com press release) that “Jack Gillis took his wife’s last name in 1996 and they divorced last March.” And we’ve loved their music from way back when. Note to Time: Think of the Whites as a Ramones-like concept — you know, Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, Tommy …?
