The Coup

This forward-thinking Oakland, Calif. rap outfit is still touring 2012’s Sorry to Bother You, an album made of equal parts politics, party anthems, and biting humor. Sonically, these guys are referencing everything from funk, to punk, to “Hey Ya!’-era OutKast, all while frontman Boots Riley lampoons the one-percent, spoiled kids, capitalism, and more. Even when they’re seething, these guys are fun — Pitchfork astutely observed that “The Coup have always been a party band first and foremost, and Sorry to Bother You reaffirms their belief that the revolution, if there is going to be one, will start at the hips.”
