No Better Time Than Now - Ghostly International

Shigeto (aka producer-drummer Zach Saginaw) has done some soul-searching during his time away from his hometown Detroit, spending several years in Brooklyn exploring and exorcising past experiences and his family history through trippy, synth-scrambled, half-danceable dreamscapes. Now he’s back, with a new album and a spot on the Movement/Ghostly International stage at Meadowbrook for the inaugural Laneway Music Festival, and he’s hoping to reflect (or help spur anew) the city’s characteristic resiliency, with jams that mirror the collective frustration. His lead single, a simultaneously tribal-yet-spacey instrumental hip-hop arrangement, is titled “Detroit Part 1,” suggestive that the story goes on and referring back to the album’s emphasis on the here and now.

Shigeto performs on Sept. 14, with Matthew Dear and ADULT on the Movement Stage presented by Ghostly International for St. Jerome’s Laneway Music Festival at the Meadow Brook in Rochester Hills. Headliners include Sigur Ros and the National. See lanewayfestival.com for more info.
