Riders in the norm

Few things in this world are quite as badass as a motorcycle. What other product has managed to retain its countercultural mystique, its aura of dangerous magnetism, while becoming such a part of the mainstream that even Rosie O’Donnell can be counted as an enthusiast?

Exploiting this combination of corporate and cool, Toyota Trucks presents The 25th Annual Cycle World International Motorcycle Show this weekend as part of a 13-city nationwide tour. The show offers hardcore bikers as well as weekend riders the chance to get up-close and personal with the best 2006 cycles, not to mention their stepchildren — dirt bikes, cruisers and ATVs.

More than 15 manufacturers — including such big names as Harley-Davidson, BMW, Honda, Yamaha and Vespa — will peddle the newest models, as well as a variety of accessories and gear.

Meanwhile in the Kid’s Cycle Center, the 6-15 crowd can check out kid-friendly bikes and ATVs, along with kid-sized apparel and the obligatory “don’t try this at home” safety spiel.

Retro-philes will enjoy the vintage, classic and antique motorcycles displays, and extreme sport enthusiasts will dig the BOSS Stunt Show — where riders perform daring stunts on the kind of quarter-pipe ramp that’s usually considered the domain of skate boarders and BMX riders. Gravity? Who cares about gravity?

And there’s more. Billy Lane has a display of the customizing skills that have landed him spots on Jesse James’ Monster Garage and other television programs including BIG! and Corbin’s Ride On.

Friday-Sunday, Jan. 6-8, at the Rock Financial Showplace, 46100 Grand River Ave., Novi. Call 800-331-5706 or visit motorcycleshows.com. Tickets $13 for adults, $5 for children 6-11, younger children free.
