One of the unlikeliest sentences you’ll ever find on a press release is “Italian alt-prog metal band to release environmental awareness concept album,” but that’s exactly how Black Snow is being promoted. Fair enough. So the lyrics are all about the shit that humans do to the planet, the mess that we’re making. It’s not every day that hippie sentiments sit comfortably with chugging metal riffs, but it sort of works here. Only sort of, though, because, to be honest, the concept gets lost fairly early on. Rusty Rustichelli wails in a contemporary radio metal manner over very cleanly produced guitar, bass, and drums, and the songs are fairly epic.   —Brett Callwood
