So Mayor Gary Zych managed to survive yet another recall effort — the third in three years. But it was a close one for him and Hamtramck City Council President Phillip Kwik, who faced his first recall last week. The margin was slim, but Z pulled it out with 1,244 votes against the recall and 1,164 in favor of it. Kwik hung on to his post with only a 59-vote lead: 1,233 opposed a recall and 1,174 voted to give him the boot.
And just what are we to make of this? Well, News Hits thinks it’s good news for Hamtown even though Zych and Kwik, along with the rest of the council, have been stripped of all administrative powers since the state took over the city last month. They can only watch as the state attempts to get Hamtramck, which is $2.4 million in debt, back on solid financial ground. Long before the takeover, Zych and Kwik tried to put the city back on track financially but were thwarted by a bloc of regressives on the council. Our congrats to Z, Phil and those who voted to keep them in office.Ann Mullen contributed to News Hits, which is edited by Curt Guyette. He can be reached at 313-202-8004 or email@example.com
