Cowboy turned chef and restaurant owner Grady Spears has collaborated with food writer June Naylor to offer up something of a combination of cowboy campfire cooking and fine dining. It's The Texas Cowboy Kitchen by Grady Spears and June Naylor (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $19.99), which takes Tex-Mex and Southwestern dishes on a trip uptown. Expect such recipes as barbecued quail tamales and Dutch-oven strawberry cobbler, illustrated with tempting black-and-white photos.
Originating in Taiwan in the '80s, bubble tea was once the combination of black tea, brown large pearl tapioca, condensed milk and honey. Variants of this novel drink have surfaced all over the world. We like the fruit versions you can get at places like Thang Long in Madison Heights. Essentially it's an exotic smoothie available in flavors like honeydew and avocado. The dark and chewy tapioca pearls floating around don't taste like much but they sure are fun to suck through an oversized straw.
