A gourmet raw vegan pop-up supper and brunch club, and more

Jun 13, 2012 at 12:00 am

Pop-up eats  You may not have heard of it yet, but Chartreuse is Detroit's twice-a-month, gourmet raw vegan pop-up supper and brunch club. The person behind the club is Corinne Rice , a certified raw and vegan chef who aims to create "a memorable culinary and social moment that exists briefly and disappears immediately, as if it were a dream." The good news is that Rice is ready to set the table again, this time at the Fisher Building in Detroit's New Center. The menu is raw, vegan and gluten-free as always. First is an Asian salad with mixed greens, coconut noodles, baby corn, scallions and more. Next is a jalapeño-watermelon gazpacho, then a crab cake with Creole slaw, red jalapeño cream and saffron-corn pico de gallo. The meal will end with a combination of almond nougatine, orange-cardamom white chocolate and vanilla bean-sour cherry marmalade. The experience will include live music, as well as a video crew from American Hipster Presents, which will film the meal for its YouTube documentary series. It all happens next week, June 22, at 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit; arrive between 7 and 7:30 p.m., meal starts at 7:30; park in the lot off Third Street, enter through the doors nearest that lot, head down the hallway toward the atrium;  tickets are $50 and must be purchased no later than Tuesday, June 19; tickets available at tinyurl.com/85rujot.

Eats for Pops  Still don't know what to get the old man for Father's Day? How about a meal at Camp Ticonderoga? The menu will include fresh fish, tender filet mignon, and many other hearty meals for the big guy in your life. At 5725 Rochester Rd., Troy; call 248-828-2825 to make a reservation.

No small beer  Speaking of ways to treat the dad in your life to a special day, does he love Michigan beer? How about a riverboat cruise? He can have both things together this Father's Day with the Michigan Beer Tasting Boat Cruise, taking place this week. Join beer-lovers and sample dozens of Michigan craft beers, among other Michigan potables aboard the Detroit Princess. The four-hour jaunt disembarks at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 17, from the dock at 201 Civic Center Dr., Detroit; tickets $49.99; see motorcitybrewtours.com for info.

Chill out  The leading provider of quick soup in a casual environment — the chain known as Zoup! — knows that cold soup on a hot day can be tasty and restoring. That's why the chain will mark the first day of summer by offering a free 8-ounce chilled soup to customers, gazpacho or pumpkin pie bisque. It's just a taste of some cooling choices available all summer, which will include herbed tomato shrimp and ginger butternut squash. Drop in for a serving, on Wednesday, June 20. See zoup.com for area stores.

It's official: Americans are more approving of pot. According to a recent poll, half of us favor legalization. Thus it's timely that we stumbled upon Elise McDonough's The Official High Times Cannabis Cookbook: More Than 50 Irresistible Recipes That Will Get You High. The recipes look and sound great! The Bobby Blackout chocolate cake "stones 12," a fitting finish to THC turkey with magic marinade or pot- and pancetta-stuffed beef tenderloin with port mushrooms, all giving new meaning to "the munchies."
