16.5% ABV Vermouth is often an afterthought. Perhaps not to educated liquor aficionados, but to the average drinker, vermouth might be a rarely purchased specialty, or a misunderstood mixer.
But the truth is, one of the best liquors in the world is a vermouth. Antica Formula, often called the "King of Vermouth," has been in production since 1786. Antonio Benedetto Carpano, the man credited with creating vermouth, first produced it in Turin, Italy, 329 years ago and the recipe has lived on through stewards who have jealously guarded it.
According to legend surrounding the brand, three people, each of whom only know their third of the recipe, must be involved in the process of preparing the vermouth. This keeps the formula shrouded in mystery, as popular as the day it was completed, and unable to be replicated.
Carpano Antica Formula isn't just a vermouth. In fact it's better enjoyed as an aperitif. It can be sipped as a dessert wine or used to craft the perfect martini, Negroni, or Manhattan. Distinguished from other sweet vermouths by hints of vanilla and notes of spices, dried fruits, dates, and orange rind, it's a rare and special red sweet vermouth that's produced in limited quantities and sought after for its authentic nature and beautiful packaging.
