  • Armando's

    (313) 554-0666

Armando's stays open until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (until 2 a.m. the rest of the week), and the post-bar crowd that spills over from Dearborn and downtown Detroit's clubs can choose from the regular Mexican fare-or Mexican breakfast. They roll in at 2-3 a.m., and, depending on what's happening, there can be a line outside at 3 a.m. Owner Cecilia Benedict approves of the late night crowd, and says watching buzzed patrons, churlish lovers and new friends can make it worth working late.

  • Grand Azteca

321 W. 14 Mile Rd., Madison Heights Detroit

    (248) 733-9662

The menu at this kitsch-clogged Mexican restaurant (in a former Denny's) is dominated by tacos, burritos, enchiladas, nachos and fajitas with the spice and fire level toned down for tender Midwestern palates. The portions are generous, and they offer 31 combination dinners ($6.50 to $7.50) that mix and match endless varieties of tacos, enchiladas, burritos and chalupas with chile relleno, beans, rice, sour cream and the more obscure tostaguac, a crispy corn tortilla with beans, beef, lettuce, tomatoes and guacamole. The affordable price structure prevails with the drinks, with 10 Mexican beers going for $3.50 each, and a liter of sangria or house wine that may set a local record at an incomprehensible $9.50.
  • Green Lantern Lounge

28960 John R Rd., Madison Heights Detroit

    (248) 541-5439

As in most older pizza palaces, the kitchen first made thin-crusted round pies and only added the deep-dish variety around seven years ago. Both come in four sizes from 10 inches ($5.35-$5.95) to 16 inches ($10.50-$11.95) with the 10-inch mini suitable for two. The price structure here and throughout the menu is quite reasonable, another explanation for the Green Lantern’s popularity.
  • Juan's Hacienda

31313 Dequindre Rd., Madison Heights Detroit

    (248) 583-9792

The menu announces that Juan’s is the home of the flaming fajita. The flaming fajita tops the price list and comes with three small tortillas and a plate of beans and rice. These were excellent fajitas, with lots of charred green peppers and onions, grilled chicken and steak, well seasoned. It was great fun to watch our server pour brandy around the perimeter of the cast iron griddle and set it aflame with a click from a barbecue lighter. The liquor gives it a mellow flavor. Go ahead and splurge for the extra cheese ($1) because the flames melt it so nicely.

  • Los Altos

    7056 W. Vernor Hwy. Detroit

    (313) 841-3109

Catering mostly to owner Adan Lopez’s fellow immigrants from Jalisco, which gave birth to tacos al pastor, Los Altos’ tacos al pastor are out of this world: filled to the brim with succulent, mellow chunks of pork leg marinated in an adobo mixture. A taco costs $1; $1.50 if you’re silly enough to ask for a flour tortilla. The English menu is careful to advise that chopped onion and cilantro are the traditional toppings on a taco. If you insist on adding cheese, you may, but it’ll cost you 50 cents. The restaurant's traditional dishes show off the cooks’ ability to use every last portion of an animal: Besides rib-eye (bistec tampiqueño), chorizo or pork loin (lomo), you can try cabeza (head), buche (pork maw), lengua (tongue) or tripas (beef tripe). A plato grande of four meats with salad, beans and rice is said to feed six, for $18. The small $4 birria soup, made with marinated goat, is a rich, tender meal in itself. Los Altos’ menu is long, including seafood dishes such as shrimp, tilapia, oysters and ceviche; tortas made with 13 kinds of meat or avocado; the usual chiles rellenos, burritos, enchiladas, flautas, quesadillas and even chimichangas. For dessert there’s flan, sopapillas or tres leches cake. Cash only, no bar.

Finding a satisfying meal at these places off the beaten path is a thrill. Los Corrales is one of them. The atmosphere is warm and laid-back. Los Corrales offers fare from all over Mexico. You’ll find chiles rellenos as well as chimichangas, but an emphasis on seafood dishes such as ceviche. Finish it all off with a horchata.

  • Pollo Chapin

    2054 Junction Detroit

    (313) 554-9087

Pollo Chapin serves black beans, store-bought tortillas, and chicken, chicken, then eggs and then more chicken (100 pieces for $92). But mixed in with the wings and thighs are some typical Guatemalan delights, such as tamales, (masa made with broth and lard, stuffed with pork or chicken and, sometimes, an olive, wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed) and chicken "chapin," barbecue and milanesa (breaded cutlets). House-made chicken soup comes free with every meal, with broad noodles, carrots, a rich orange-yellow broth and not a whole lot of chicken, as befitting its origins. Weekends will feature other specials, such as a milanesa de res (beef) or carne guisado for $7.49. Prices are breathtakingly low — two pieces of chicken, a roll, two sides and soup for $5, for example — but if you really want to scrimp, breakfast is available any time.
