Metro Times picked up three awards for 2008 work at last week's convention of the 130-member Association of Alternative Newsweeklies in Tucson, Ariz. MT competes in the class for large weeklies with a circulation 50,000 and up.
The team of design director Sean Bieri, news editor Cut Guyette and editor W. Kim Heron won a second-place award in the "format buster" category for "The adventures of Kwame-man," which recounted the ex-mayor's saga in comic book form with an accompanying analysis piece.
The writing team of Guyette and Heron won a third-place award for political columns for the cover story-editorial "Just Go," calling for the resignation of then-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, plus a second editorial about Kilpatrick and an endorsement of Barack Obama for president.
Meanwhile, Guyette scored a third award, a third place in the public service category for his ongoing coverage of Detroit's tangled deliberations on whether to continue using its trash-to-energy incinerator.
This year's awards bring MT's AAN total to 17 since 1996.
