Critic's Choice: Southgate’s Mike D saw The Hissyfits in New York at a CMJ performance and was so impressed with the Brooklynites he asked them to contribute a song to a Patty Duke compilation CD he was releasing on his Top Quality Rock & Roll label. Now he’s putting out their latest full-length, Letters From Frank, and it’s one of the best records I’ve heard all year. Seriously. Echoed, velvety, stained-glass psyche pop with delayed handclaps, clear-glass pop-punk, decadent rock feedback and three-part punk-rock vocals that “Go-Go” Gadget stretch the definition of harmonizing (see reviews section). The Hissyfits CD release party is part of the Majestic Complex’s Summer Spectacular, sandwiched in between performances by Dirty Shame and The Witches. Can you say “rock show”? Admittance to just the Magic Stick is $7, but if you want to take part in the food, drink, rock, bowling and billiards bonanza throughout the complex, you’ll be forking over 20 bucks, which will get you tickets for all the above fun stuff.
