A river runs through Ann Arbor’s latest art show

The latest art event in Ann Arbor combines high art reproductions, concrete sculptures of critters, repurposed canoes, and much more. It’s called the River Art Grand Opening, and it gets officially kicked off with a celebration this Friday at the the Gallup Park Canoe Fan Site.

What’s a canoe fan? No, it’s not a devotee of canoes. It’s a fan-shaped sculpture made out of nine canoes by Chicago-based artist Victoria Fuller. It’s part of an artistic celebration of the Huron River called Canoe Imagine Art (geddit?), in which artists were invited to take old canoes from the Argo and Gallup Canoe Liveries and create a canoe-themed public art installation. From 5 to 6 p.m., there will be docents to answer questions, and at 5 p.m. a canoe trip will embark on an Argo-to-Gallup journey.

Not all the art will be canoe-themed art. There will be a few fine art reproductions from the DIA’s Inside-Outside program, custom-made concrete sculptures of native Michigan animals, and the Community Music School will give a live performance. There will even be a few food trucks, which are now de rigueur at all outdoor Michigan events.
